What is the Internet, Actually?

From a technical standpoint, you can describe the internet as a bunch of interconnected networks that allow for the exchange of information. For most of us though, the internet is just a place where you can find almost any piece of information, buy or sell goods, and engage in discussions with people from all walks of life.

Why is this Important?

Well, from a young age, I’ve always had this inherent fascination with it. It almost felt magic how you could log into a chatroom (Yes, I’m that old) and communicate with someone on a totally different side of the world. How we went from getting scolded for scratching our dad’s favourite CD to being able to download any song you want onto as many devices as you like. And this was only the beginning.

Today the internet has become:

– The infrastructure that allows many of us to work from home.
– Our institutions of Education (And no, I’ve never searched “How to chop an onion?”)
– A place for guidance on the latest industry trends.
– And I know you do your grocery shopping online too, you lazy bugger 🤨

There’s no doubt that the internet has become an integral part of modern living. However, I cannot help but wonder what the future of the internet looks like. I’ve got a hot take, though, and allow me to share it with you. Here it goes:

The Future of The Internet

Considering the rapid advancement of AI (And yes, I know it’s been a buzzword lately but it’s here nonetheless) along with internet speeds becoming nothing short of ridiculous, I see a world where humans no longer really need to make their own decisions.

Hear me out.

Your phone/computer probably know more about you than anyone else already so who better to decide what time you should leave for your meeting? Or what you should wear? It could probably search every existing store for that perfect dress faster than you can blink, right? This seems like it will inevitably lead to our devices not only making decisions on our behalf but also communicating those decisions with other computers faster than we ever could over an email or phone call.

Conclusion

That’s my hot take. What’s your thoughts on this? Reply to the post or feel free to send us an email. Would love to hear your ideas too.

See ya later,
Mpho
